Peak season vs. off-peak
Nationally, moving demand peaks from roughly May through September, with June, July and August the busiest months. October through April generally brings more open dates. Large moving companies such as North American Van Lines and Mayflower describe the same pattern.
What’s different in Austin
- Summer heat: June through September afternoons are hot. Early starts are easier on everyone—and on your belongings.
- University calendars: move-in and move-out around UT Austin and Texas State in San Marcos make mid-August and the end of the school year especially busy for apartments.
- Lease turnover: the last and first days of each month fill fastest.
- Big events: festivals and race weekends—such as SXSW in March, ACL Fest in the fall and the Formula 1 race at Circuit of the Americas—can snarl traffic and parking. Check the calendar before you commit to a date.
The best days and times
- Mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) dates usually have the most availability.
- Mid-month is calmer than the first and last few days of the month.
- Morning starts beat the heat and leave time for the unexpected.
How far ahead to book
Two to four weeks ahead works for most local moves. For summer, month-end dates and moves around the university calendar, book as early as you can. Work backward from your date with the moving checklist.
