Niederwald is a small city that straddles Hays and Caldwell counties, with SH 21 as its main road. Like nearby Uhland, it was settled by German immigrants in the 1800s, and it still has a rural feel—homes on acreage and newer houses on the open land between Kyle and Lockhart.
