Which box for what

  • Small boxes: books, tools, canned goods, records—anything heavy
  • Medium boxes: kitchen items, toys, small appliances, linens
  • Large boxes: pillows, lampshades, bedding and other light, bulky things
  • Wardrobe boxes: hanging clothes, straight from the closet
  • Dish-pack boxes: double-walled boxes for dishes, glasses and fragile kitchenware

Packing tips that prevent damage

Keep each box under about 50 pounds, fill empty space with paper so nothing shifts, and tape the top and bottom seams. Label two sides and the top with the room and contents. For more, see how to pack like the pros.

Why most people run short

Kitchens, garages and closets always hold more than expected. Buy a few extra small boxes—they're the first to run out—and keep unused ones to return or pass along.

Common questions

Box questions

How many boxes do I need for a two-bedroom apartment?

As a starting point, about 25 small, 20 medium and 10 large boxes plus a few wardrobe and dish-pack boxes. Use the calculator to adjust for how much you own.

What size box should books go in?

Small boxes. Books get heavy fast, and small boxes keep the weight manageable and safe to carry.

Can the movers pack for me?

Yes. Our crew can pack the whole home, just the kitchen and fragile items, or anything in between.
