How to use this checklist

Start as early as you can. Eight weeks is comfortable for a house; an apartment move can compress the first stages into two or three weeks. If you're short on time, focus on the essentials: book the mover, reserve elevators and parking, and keep documents and medication with you.

The tasks most people forget

  • Building rules. Elevator reservations, loading-dock hours and insurance certificates at both addresses.
  • Parking. In Austin, a truck in a metered space or curb lane may need a City permit—call 3-1-1.
  • Texas paperwork. Update your driver license address within 30 days of moving, plus your vehicle registration and voter registration. See the Texas change-of-address checklist.
  • The freezer. Defrost it a day ahead so it doesn't leak in the truck.

Let the crew take tasks off the list

A full-service move covers packing, disassembly, loading, transport and setup. See all moving services or the moving day guide.

Common questions

Checklist questions

How far in advance should I start planning a move?

About eight weeks ahead for a house, and three to four weeks for most apartments. Book the mover early for summer and end-of-month dates.

What's the most important thing to do first?

Book a licensed mover and get a written proposal, then reserve elevators, docks and parking at both addresses.
