Required by Texas
Driver license or ID: within 30 days
Texas requires you to change the address on your driver license or ID card within 30 days of moving. You can do it online, by mail or in person. Source: Texas DPS ↗.
Vehicle registration
Update the address on your vehicle registration with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles so renewal notices reach you. A USPS change of address does not update TxDMV records. Visit TxDMV ↗.
Voter registration
Update your voter registration address so you can vote at your new polling place. Start at VoteTexas.gov ↗.
Mail and accounts
- File a change of address with USPS ↗
- Banks, credit cards and insurance (home, auto and health)
- Employer and payroll
- Subscriptions, deliveries and online stores
- Doctors, dentists, pharmacy and veterinarian
- Schools and childcare
Utilities in the Austin area
- Electric: inside the City of Austin, service is through Austin Energy; elsewhere, your provider depends on the address—ask your landlord, builder or the previous owner
- Water, wastewater and trash: usually your city or local utility district
- Gas: if the home has gas service, schedule a start date
- Internet: book installation early; appointments can be weeks out
Schedule shut-off at the old home for the day after you move out, and start-up at the new home for the day before you arrive.
