Moving day guide
Twelve steps to a calm moving day
Every move is different, but good moving days follow the same pattern. Use this as your checklist from the morning the crew arrives to the first night in your new home.
Start early.
Have coffee, clear the entry and be dressed for work before the crew arrives—moving days start fast.
Pack the last items.
Toiletries, bedding and the coffee maker go in an open-first box that rides with you or loads last.
Keep valuables with you.
Medication, IDs, documents, keys, jewelry, cash and chargers never go on the truck.
Clear the path.
Prop doors, move rugs that slide, and save a parking spot close to the door for the truck.
Walk the crew through.
Point out fragile pieces, items that stay behind and anything that needs special handling.
Read the paperwork.
Texas movers must give you a written proposal before loading and a moving services contract. Read both and don’t rely on verbal promises.
Plan for the heat.
Most of the year in Austin, a closed truck gets hot. Carry candles, vinyl records, wine, electronics and plants in your car.
Do a final sweep.
Check closets, cabinets, the attic, garage and backyard before the truck leaves.
Secure the old home.
Lock windows, set the thermostat, photograph the empty rooms and hand over keys.
Get to the new place first.
Be there to unlock, direct furniture to the right rooms and confirm utilities are on.
Check before you sign.
Note any damage on the contract before signing at delivery; Texas requires the mover to give you a signed copy.
Set up the essentials.
Beds, bathroom and kitchen basics first—everything else can wait until tomorrow.
